Travel Patterns in Australian Cities
Project Description
In 1985-86, the only national survey of travel patterns in Australian cities ever conducted was undertaken for the Federal Office of Road Safety by SOCIALDATA Australia Pty. Ltd. The primary objective of the survey was to obtain information on exposure to risk by various modes of transport. While detailed geographic information on origins and destinations was not coded, the data provides a unique source of data on overall travel patterns in Australian Cities. The survey covered approximately 30,000 households in the eight state and territory capital cities, plus another 23 areas of rural Australia.
This project uses this database on a continuing basis to analyse travel patterns in Australian Cities on a consistent basis.
Examples of typical analyses include:
- comparison of trip rates in capital cities
- comparison of travel speeds in capital cities
- travel time budgets for different cities
- analysis of response characteristics to mailback surveys
- estimation of synthetic household characteristics
- estimation of exposure by mode and demographic group
