Patterns of Immobility in Travel Surveys
Project Description
Over 20 years, TUTI has been involved in the design, conduct and analysis of many urban travel surveys in Australia. In almost all cases, however, the emphasis in the results has been on patterns of mobility, in terms of trip rates, travel distances and travel times. This project consideres the reverse side of the coin and concentrates on patterns of immobility. Given that 10-20% of respondents report no travel on their Travel Day, this behaviour represents a sizeable proportion of the population.
Data is assembled from many travel surveys conducted by TUTI (and presursors of TUTI), along with other Australian travel surveys, to investigate patterns of immobility within these surveys. These findings are also compared with results obtained from an Australian Time-Use Survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
