Arterial Travel Time System
Project Description
VicRoads and Transurban had expressed an interest in developing and fielding a travel time system for non-freeway arterial roads, based upon use of Melbourne CityLink (MCL) e-tags. The proposal was to locate e-tag readers on the approaches of up to 200 selected major intersections covering the major non-freeway arterial roads. These e-tag readers would be configured to cover one or a number of lanes and would have codes to enable them to read MCL tags without causing these tags to 'beep'. The calculation of travel time would be based upon matching e-tag serial number readings at various intersections along an arterial road route.
TUTI and Multi-modal Transport Solutions were invited to consider the feasibility of such a system. In considering the feasibility of an Arterial Travel Time System, seven major issues were addressed:
- What information could be collected?
- From whom could it be collected?
- How could it be collected?
- How could it be consolidated?
- How could it be analysed?
- How could it be distributed?
- How could it be made available?
